Nate Hilberg first gained his appreciation for the liberal arts as a psychology and religion double major at Wabash College. He continued being an enthusiast as an academic advisor in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh beginning in 1995 and has enjoyed being an academic advisor in the University Honors College.
Hilberg’s teaching experiences include various issues in philosophy of religion at Pitt and history of philosophy, ethics, and religions of the world at Butler County Community College. In his teaching Hilberg is interested in exploring the relationship between religion and rationality. More generally, in all of his teaching he is keen on having students situate ideas within the wider scholarly landscape.
Hilberg’s research has spanned a wide range of issues in philosophy, specifically philosophy of religion. His master’s thesis in religion examined the intersection of existentialist philosophy and religious thought. His master’s thesis in philosophy examined Marxist critiques of ideology as they bear on feminist theory. And his doctoral dissertation examined interpretations of truth and their relation to the problem of religious diversity and to the interpretation of religion more broadly.
Although his academic training centers on the humanities, Hilberg is an advocate for learning across the disciplines. Some of his duties include:
- Codirector of the Brackenridge Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship, where he facilitates an interdisciplinary community by helping to oversee the work of fellows doing research across the disciplines.
- Faculty sponsor of the Pittsburgh Undergraduate Review, a journal sponsored by the honors college, which offers undergraduates an opportunity to publish analytical and scholarly essays.
- Hilberg facilitates the reading group Pizza and Prose, which exemplifies these same values in a more informal setting over a pizza lunch and readings provided by the honors college.
To get involved in any of these activities, contact Hilberg at nhilberg@pitt.edu.
In his spare time Hilberg and his wife, Holly, can be found chasing their children, Ryan and Megan. He may also be found, ever true to his Midwestern roots, trying to brainwash anyone who will listen into becoming a Chicago White Sox fan.
