Housing
Our philosophy is that you can learn just as much outside the classroom as inside it. What better way to do that than to provide University Honors College (UHC) students the opportunity to live together and learn from one another? The residential honors communities are housing options for UHC students who want to take advantage of this special opportunity. Students from many different academic disciplines live and learn together in their own communities.
The Residential Honors Communities
The residential honors communities at the University of Pittsburgh are both the same as, yet different from, traditional college residences. They are similar in that they are places for fun, personal growth, and meeting peers. They're places where students can unwind, relax, and enjoy collegiate life outside the classroom.
These communities differ from traditional residences in that they are not retreats from the intellectual life of the University. Instead, they are central to the intellectual life of the University. They are places where students can further explore intellectual topics from the classroom and beyond. They also provide amazing opportunities for academic support. As one student said, “When will you ever have 100 tutors in every subject imaginable who are also your friends?”
These communities have residents who hail from every corner of the globe, represent practically every major, and have a multitude of different interests. Despite these differences, all of these students share commitment to academic excellence, student involvement, and responsible living.
The First-Year Honors Community
Located in Forbes Residence Hall, the first-year honors community is home to more than 225 first-year undergraduates who make the commitment to live and learn with one another. The most important aspect of this community is it is strictly for first-year students.
Our goal is that first-year students can learn from each other and enrich their intellectual lives by living with like-minded people, yet can take advantage of living in a traditional residence hall with other first-year students as well.
Sophomore and Junior Honors Communities
The sophomore and junior honors communities are home to approximately 100 undergraduate students. Upperclassmen reside in an honors apartment building that houses UHC students exclusively.
These communities are places where students can continue to develop friendships, challenge one another, learn from the scholarly diversity that surrounds them, and support one another as they hone their academic and intellectual interests.
The residential honors communities depend on the maturity and the creativity of their members. The continued success of these communities is truly the result of the people who have lived there. In return for your commitment to these communities, the University of Pittsburgh and the honors college are dedicated to making your experience a rewarding and special one.
