Pitt Honors College Graduate Mary Ellen Callahan Nominated to Serve on Pitt's Board of Trustees
10/15/09 At its fall meeting this morning, the Nominating Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees recommended for election to membership on the board Pitt alumnus Mary Ellen Callahan (A&S '90), chief privacy officer and chief Freedom of Information Act officer in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The full board is expected to act on the nomination at its next meeting, at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 30.
07/16/09 University of Pittsburgh Honors College student Natalia Arutynov, a senior with a double major in economics and political science in the School of Arts and Sciences, has been named a 2009 National Security Education Program David L. Boren Scholar. Arutynov, a resident of Upper Holland, Pa., is a first-generation U.S. citizen of Armenian descent who was born in the Republic of Georgia.
04/22/09 Timothy M. Adamo, a University of Pittsburgh Honors College senior who will receive the BS degree in mathematics, physics, and psychology April 26, has been awarded a University Clarendon Fund Award and The Dervorguilla Scholarship from the University of Oxford to study for the PhD degree at Oxford's Balliol College in England.
04/16/09 Three University of Pittsburgh Honors College students have been selected to receive 2009 Humanity in Action (HIA) summer fellowships. Sesi Aliu, a sophomore majoring in international affairs and area studies in Pitt's University Center for International Studies and French in Pitt's School of Arts and Sciences, and Daniel Gore, a junior majoring in political science and history in Arts and Sciences, will participate in the European Programs in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Paris, France, respectively; Benjamin Mericli, a senior majoring in engineering physics, philosophy, and linguistics in Arts and Sciences, will take part in the American Program in New York City.
Two University of Pittsburgh Students Receive Goldwater Scholarships
04/06/09 University of Pittsburgh Honors College students Elizabeth Oczypok, a junior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology in the School of Arts and Sciences, and Andrew Savinov, a sophomore majoring in chemistry and molecular biology in Arts and Sciences, have been named 2009 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship winners for their exceptional independent research in the natural sciences. Oczypok is from Sewickley, Pa., and Savinov is from Upper St. Clair, Pa. Patrick Vescovi, a Pitt junior from Richmond, Ohio, majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering, and bioengineering, received an honorable mention.
Pitt Honors College Senior Anthropology Major Wins Gates Cambridge Scholarship
02/10/09 Katherine M. MacCord is the first Pitt student to receive the Gates Cambridge, which was established in 2000 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Wyncote, Pa., native plans to study biological anthropology at the University of Cambridge in England.
