About Kevin
Originally from Bedford, Texas, I moved to Dublin, Ohio, when I was about 3 years old. After 16 years in the same place I needed to get out of central Ohio. Besides having one of the best science programs in the region, Pitt was a perfect medium between far enough away from home but close enough to be able to visit home when I wanted.
In high school I played football and basketball and was involved in National Honor Society, Student Cabinet, and several random clubs. Although I’m not a Division I college athlete, at Pitt I play in the intramural football league as well as participated in the honors college flag football tournament. I also play in the intramural basketball league. There is a Student Government Board and other government-style organizations if you are interested, but I never pursued them.
One of my favorite aspects of Pitt is having the entire city be one bus ride away. If I need something at Target or Best Buy, all I need to do is hop on a 59U bus and I’m there in less than 15 minutes. For the most part, though, you can get whatever you need at Oakland’s 7-Eleven, Eckerd, or Rite Aid.
Pitt is unique because it really can be considered to be in two cities. Most colleges are either in the middle of nowhere or smack-dab in the middle of a city. Pitt is said to be in Pittsburgh, but Pitt’s campus is separated a few miles from downtown. The city of Oakland—where Pitt’s campus is—is the college town. You get the best of both worlds.
Finally, you can’t beat the Petersen Events Center. Sitting atop the hill (Cardiac Hill), the “Pete” is a five-minute hike, but worth every minute. Once you get there the workout facility is state of the art, and the food court has some of the best meals on campus. And of course, the basketball games held are easily the best sporting event to attend on campus—just remember to get in line early to guarantee a good seat in the Zoo.
