HEAL Health Sciences Summer Research Fellowships

HEAL (formerly known as HCHS) Health Sciences Summer Research Fellowship Program was launched in May 2014. It is intended for full-time Pitt undergraduate students on the Oakland campus who are currently engaged in biomedical research and plan to pursue a career in one of the health-related fields. HEAL Fellowship recipients receive a stipend of $4,000 for the summer term (i.e., mid-May through July) to enable them to dedicate themselves full-time to conducting an independent research project under the mentorship of faculty members in any of the six University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Schools (Dental Medicine, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences). Fellows may not take a summer course or work a summer job.

In addition to active participation in a research project, the HEAL Program requires all HEAL Fellows to attend a weekly half-day seminar during which Fellows present reports on their research and address questions from the other Fellows. Fellows also are expected to attend several talks presented by health sciences faculty mentors throughout the summer. Research topics cover a broad range within the health sciences, from cell and molecular biology to public health and psychiatry. The expected number of HEAL Fellows is 10-12, all with career interests in the health sciences.

HEAL Fellows are selected on the basis of their academic record, the experience they have had in working in the research laboratory of their faculty mentor, the strength of the endorsement expressed in the letter of recommendation from the mentor, the originality and promise of their proposed research project, and their willingness to participate in a community of scholars with cross disciplinary approaches to create innovative solutions to problems of human health and disease. Prior to applying, students must have identified a faculty mentor and selected a research project. The deadline for submitting applications for 2019 HEAL Summer Research Fellowships is March 4, 2019. Admission will be decided roughly 30 days after the application deadline.

If you would like to apply for both the Brackenridge Summer Research Fellowship and the HEAL Fellowship, you must fill out two separate applications. They are distinctly different programs and your proposals should be substantially different for the two. While the Brackenridge consists of a variety of majors from across humanities, social sciences, professional schools, and natural sciences, HEAL is focused solely on health science research. You cannot be awarded both the Brackenridge and HEAL.
