Goldwater Scholarship 2019

Prestigious $7500/year scholarship for undergraduates pursuing STEM research careers 


  • College sophomore or junior.
  • GPA close to or above 3.9.
  • Significant scientific research experience.
  • Committed to pursuing a PhD and career in scientific research.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

You must apply through Dave Fraser, Scholar-Mentor. Pitt can endorse up to 4 candidates for this award.

Application process

Now Through December

  • Thoroughly read the Goldwater website.
  • Register your Goldwater application account and submit your pre-application.
  • Send for Pitt transcripts (can be unofficial) and original transcripts of any college-level study outside of Pitt.
  • Ask 3 people (in your field or related field) for letters of recommendation. Discuss these letter writers with Dave Fraser.
    • IMPORTANT: as soon as they agree to write, provide them with the LOR packet described here.
  • Meet with your PI or a professor in your field at least 3 times to go over your research proposal.
  • Schedule and attend at least 3 advising appointments with Dave Fraser to go over the rest of your application. 

December  2019 - First Campus Deadline (TBD)

  • Submit your complete Goldwater application online.
  • Permanent residents: provide copy of permanent residence card with intent to become a U.S. citizen.
  • Faculty should E-MAIL an attachment of their LORs to Dave Fraser

December 2019

  • The campus committee will choose 4 nominees, who will continue to work on applications until final campus deadline.

January 2020 (date TBD) - Final Campus Deadline for Nominees

  • Submit final application online.
  • Faculty email final recommendations to Josh Cannon.

March 2020 - Goldwater Scholarship and Honorable Mention results announced
