The following awards do not require Pitt endorsement. Students interested in pursuing these opportunities are encouraged to seek the advice and guidance of Pitt National Scholarship advisors, but they must communicate their intent to apply as far in advance of the award deadlines as possible.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s German Chancellor Fellowship Program

Provides recent university graduates with the financial support to spend a year in Germany pursuing research-based, self-developed projects at host institutions. Projects should be of social significance; have a long-term, publicly visible impact; and be in fields such as politics, public administration, media, business, economics, society, or culture. German language knowledge is NOT required. Applicants must be a national of the United States, the Russian Federation, the People’s Republic of China, Brazil, or India.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowship

Funds one academic year of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia. Eligible languages are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese. Applicants must have earned an undergraduate degree and be pursuing a career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language. U.S. citizenship is required.

Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes

Provides field experience fighting hunger, poverty, social inequality, and racism through placements in community-based organizations across the country, and policy experience through placements in Washington, D.C. Foreign Affairs Information Technology Fellowship Program provides five Fellows (three graduates and two undergraduates) with support to pursue an IT-related degree and launch technology careers in the U.S. Department of State's Foreign Service. Hollings (Ernest F.) Undergraduate Scholarship

Provides academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study during the academic year and a 10-week, full-time internship position ($700/week) during the summer at a NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) facility. Students can be majoring in a wide range of fields. Applicants must be sophomores or in the third year of a five-year program. U.S. citizenship is required.
